TN schools to reopen for Classes 10, 12 from Jan 19

CHENNAI [Maha Media]: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday announced that schools for Classes 10 and 12 will reopen across the State after pongal festival holidays from January 19 by following the Standard Operating procedures (SOPs).

In a statement here, he said the decision to re-open the schools after a gap of more than nine months was taken after holding consultations with all the district collectors and medical experts on December 28, 2020 and after eliciting the views of the parents between January six and eight.

More than 70 per cent of the parents favoured reopening of schools for Classes 10 and 12 ahead of the board exams. Considering the medical experts and parents’ opinion and the future of the students, it has been decided to reopen the schools for Classes 10 and 12 with hostel facilities from January 19.

He said not more than 25 students should be allowed per class. Mr.Palaniswami said students attending the schools will be provided with Vitamin and Zinc tablets by the Health Department to boost their immunity.

Besides, hand sanitizers would also be provided to all the government schools by the Health department. The students and teachers will have to wear face masks compulsorily both inside and outside the school premises. All the schools in the State were remained closed from March 25 last year after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown.

While the board exams were conducted for students, all students of other classes were promoted to the next class. The State had earlier planned to reopen the schools after the Deepavali festival, but withdrew it later following criticisms from educationists and political parties as the pandemic was not under control.

The number of COVID cases has started declining owing to various steps taken by the State government.
