Vaccination mandatory for students over 18 yrs in TN Colleges

NEW DELHI [Maha Media] Vaccination has been made mandatory for students above 18 years of age to attend offline classes in Tamil Nadu. The announcement for the same was made by Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian. The decision has been taken by the government amid the spread of the new Omicron variant in the country. 

The Health Minister attended a high-level meeting of educationists. Following this, he highlighted that the Secretary, Higher Education would be writing a letter to all educational institutions. The letter would direct educational institutions to make it compulsory for students above the age of 18 to have at least 1 dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. 

As per inputs from news agency, the Health Minister mentioned that till now 46% of Engineering students have been vaccinated with the first dose. Further, as of now, only 12% of students have been vaccinated with both doses of COVID-19. The total number of people in the state who received both doses of COVID-19 vaccination is 7,43,95,424. Further, the number of people who received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is 4,68,99,8701 cases. Read: Tamil Nadu: Schools insist government to cancel class 11 board exams

State Health Minister Ma Subramanian also highlighted that the college administration would be verifying the student list to ensure that 100% of the students are vaccinated. As per IANS, "There have been reports of a higher possibility and risk of spread of infection in college canteens and dining area of the educational institutions."

The total number of active cases of COVID-19 in the state is 7883. The active ratio due to COVID-19 in the state is 0.29%. Further, the death ratio due to COVID-19 in the state is 1.34%. Amid the threat due to COVID-19, the Health Minister also highlighted get together in educational institutions would be conducted only after prior approval. The Minister said that students should be sent to canteens in batches and students should bring in food in disposable containers.
