Iga Swiatek becomes the new French Open Champion
NEW DELHI [Maha Media]: In Tennis, Polish teenager Iga Swiatek has become the new French Open Champion. She beat the American Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin in the Women Singles final by 6-4, 6-1. The 19-year-old Swiatek will earn $1,900,000 for the incredible achievement and moves to 17th position in the world ranking.
Earlier, Sofia Kenin left the court due to injury and could not play her natural game after returning on the court.
The 19-year-old pointed at consistency, saying that's where the women's game is falling short. "The biggest challenge for me is to be consistent. This is where women's tennis is struggling with. That's why we have so many new Grand Slam winners, we are not as consistent as Rafa (Nadal), Roger (Federer) and Novak (Djokovic). That's why my goal is to be consistent."
Swiatek is looking forward to the attention and adulation she will get as Grand Slam champion. She said: "I don't have a problem with attention, with people surrounding me. It's going to be okay."
Iga has shot up 37 places to 17th in WTA rankings released on Monday, following her stunning French Open win over the weekend.
The 19-year-old Pole ensured her place in history when she became her country's first major singles champion on Saturday.
The top three remains unchanged, Australian Ashleigh Barty still leading the rankings despite opting out of competing at Roland Garros over Covid-19 fears.
Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal remains 1,890 points behind Novak Djokovic in ATP rankings despite having beaten him for a 13th French Open title at the weekend.
Behind the Roland Garros finalists lie Austrian Dominic Thiem, who reached the quarter-finals in Paris, and Roger Federer, who has been sidelined from tournament play since the Australian Open in January.
